Obama: Marines Forced to Use Taliban Weapons
By ampdead

Fri Feb 22, 2008 - I somehow managed to miss the Democrat debate last night, but I started my reading routine this morning and found this Obama clip at Hot Air.

I heard from an Army Captain who was the head of a rifle platoon - supposed to have 39 men in a rifle platoon, ended up being sent to Afghanistan with 24 because 15 of those soldiers had been sent to Iraq. As a consequence they didn't have enough ammunition, they didn't have enough Humvees, they were actually capturing Taliban weapons because it was easier to get Taliban weapons than it was for them to get properly equipped by our current Commander in Chief.

It sounded absurd to me on its face - without reading the further comments at the link. Those further comments say Special Forces will carry AK's "because it's easier to scrounge ammo and it's a better weapon," and that "Army Captains don't command platoons" (Matt Burden of Blackfive), they command companies (even Wikipedia will tell you that), and bring up the 8,000 mile supply line (Stuart Koehl at the Weekly Standard).

So, is Obama just talking nonsense or is he relating an actual problem while getting the details wrong?

Update: Pentagon doubts Obama account of equipment problem.

Update to the Update: This is the sort of thing I was looking for and, as usual, the guys at Blackfive deliver the goods. This time it's Deebow, who was actually in Afghanistan, who writes, "A closed mouth gathers no foot Senator Obama."
