Did Obama Attend Controversial Sermon? Does it Matter?
By Rizzuto

Mon Mar 17, 2008 - So two separate accounts are coming out about whether or not Obama attended the July 22nd sermon given by Reverend Jeremiah Wright, one coming from Factcheck.org/The Obama Campaign and the other from Newsmax. The LA Times has the wrap up on the conflict:
In a posting this evening, Newsmax.com reports that its correspondent witnessed Sen. Barack Obama attending one of the Rev. Jeremiah Wright's anti-white sermons on July 22 and nodding his head in agreement with the black congregation.

The report on the conservative website directly contradicts the Democratic presidential candidate's recent statements that while he denounced the pastor's controversial anti-American and anti-white rhetoric, he had never heard such declarations himself in church or in private.

Ben LaBolt, a spokesman for the Obama campaign, immediately denied the Newsmax report, saying Obama was in Miami that day. He referred to an item hastily posted on the Obama Fact Check website saying simply: "Fact: Obama did not attend services on July 22."

The lengthy Newsmax report by Ronald Kessler said its correspondent, Jim Davis, attended services on July 22, 2007, at the Trinity United Church of Christ on Chicago's South Side and saw Obama in attendance. Kessler's story states:

"In his sermon that day, Wright tore into America, referring to the 'United States of White America' and lacing his sermon with expletives as Obama listened. Hearing Wright’s attacks on his own country, Obama had the opportunity to walk out, but Davis said the senator sat in his pew and nodded in agreement."

This seems like a load of he said/she said BS to me, and honestly I tend to take the word of Factcheck.org over that of Newsmax (although Newsmax in this instance claims eyewitness accounts). What these conflicting stories assume is that it matters whether or not Obama attended that particular July 22nd sermon. It doesn't...

Are we really supposed to swallow the idea that Reverend Wrights bigoted, anti-white, anti-American sermons are limited to those which we've seen? That those that that were sold as DVD's on the Church's website are the only sermons which contained the venom? Obama's camp would lead us to believe (or expect us to simply swallow) that in 20 full years of attending this Church, he never attended a single controversial sermon. Give me a break. He obviously doesn’t think too highly of us...

An interesting HuffPost piece today by Frank Schaeffer, son of evangelist Francis Schaeffer. Here Schaeffer the younger asserts that his dad committed "treason" with his anti-government tirades and that he the preacher enjoyed the confidence and friendship of several Republican bigwigs including Gerald Ford. A commentator on HuffPost wrote: "The fact that he stayed in this church despite it giving the racist Farrakan an award and beside the very reverand Wright's call to God to "Damn the USA" shows either Obama is in sync with these positions or he is deaf. There are no other possibilities. Since Obama is not deaf, it is reasonable to conclude that he is comfortable with his pastor and what his pastor stands for. This is guilit by choice, not by association." To which I replied: ".. quite correct. The fact is no responsible person has said Pastor Wright committed treason. The problem is that Sen Obama and family seem to have been quite comfortable in that church for 2 decades. The worst that can be said about the Rev is that he is a hard left nut who has had the senator's ear for 20 years as spiritual and intellectual mentor, a role not played by Francis Schaeffer in any presidential candidacy." In both of his books Obama makes references to his Pastor's Anti-White, and Anti-Government speeches. So his claims of not being there and not knowing are bullsh*t. He was there, He knew and He and his wife support it. If anyone ever wants to know how a Jim Jones or David Koresh work, just study the Obama Campaign. Because even in light of all this, his worshipers are still on their knees for him. Say's a lot for the Democrats doesn't it?
