McCain Attacks Require Dishonesty
By Rizzuto

Tue Mar 25, 2008 - It occurs to me that the Democrats two moist pointed attacks on McCain have both required a certain amount of fundamental dishonesty. First for McCain's 100 years in Iraq comment, which they are apparently going to try to convince you means that McCain is advocating for 100 years of war, which is complete nonsense. This from the Politico:
John McCain is scheduled to deliver a major foreign policy speech Wednesday in Los Angeles, one with a heavy Iraq focus, but chances are Democrats won’t be listening. They’ve already distilled his views into an easy to remember formulation: 100 years of war.

It is a reference to an offhand remark made by McCain in January about the possible duration of the U.S. presence in Iraq, a comment that Democrats now portray as the equivalent of the McCain Doctrine.

Though it’s not exactly an accurate representation of McCain’s views, Democratic strategists view the “100 years” remark as the linchpin of an effort to turn McCain's national security credentials against him by framing the Vietnam War hero as a warmonger who envisions an American presence in Iraq without end.
Not exactly an accurate representation of McCain’s views indeed. Here's the video...listen to what he actually says:

He says specifically says at 20 seconds in, "as long as American's are not being injured or harmed and wounded or killed." He's actually very clear on what he's saying, that maintaining a peace time presence would be a good thing in the middle east, just as we have maintained a presence in Japan and Korea, for 60 and 50 years respectively.

Next is the absolutely dishonest attack on McCain is his gaffe on Iran's arming and training of al Qaeda. Here's Keith Olbermann's take on McCain's flub:

And that's exactly what it was, a gaffe. Olbermann even acknowledges that McCain corrects himself seconds later after Lieberman whispers in his ear. What Olbermann does, is provide the level of media complacency required to allow these attacks to persist. Now, had McCain stood by his initial statement, or started to argue with Lieb's I could see this being scandalous. But when the Democrat Speaker of the House's hand picked intelligence chief Sylvestre Reyes of Texas doesn't know that al Qaeda are Sunni, and Hezbollah are Shia, I'd think that the Dem's would let it go.
