Democrats Pickens Plan Bluff
Aug 19, 2008 - We’ve been linked to the T. Boone Pickens energy plan for a few weeks now if you look to the right side of the website. Now, key democrats, in a desperate attempt to attach their names to a solution, have begun praising Picken’s plan and have even chosen him to headline the National Energy Summit in Las Vegas.

Harry Reid and Dick Durbin have spoken in support of Picken’s plan and even Barack Obama has managed to meet with Pickens last week and sing his praises saying, “T. Boone Pickens is right; we need a much bolder and much bigger set of solutions.”

The Pickens plan, despite the Democrats seeming endorsement, runs completely contrary to their message up to this point. Pickens has called for an increase in drilling and an exploitation of all of America’s domestic resources. When in front of a Homeland Security And Governmental Affairs hearing in July, Pickens said:
I see everything American as good…Offshore, OCS drilling, ANWR drilling, yes, all of it. I want to see all of it. I want to get off of foreign oil. Yes, all of that.
Pickens has even spoken out against Democrats playing the blame game with speculators and big oil saying, “This doesn't have anything to do with Exxon or Chevron or some speculator running up the price.

With no solutions of their own, this is a cynical Democratic bluff, pure and simple. Too beholden to the environmentalists are they to truly publicly endorse a plan written by an old oil man like Pickens. Senate Republicans should write the Pickens plan into legislation and get Democrats on the record, either supporting or opposing it. [read more]

San Francisco: Ass backwards on immigration
Aug 19, 2008 - Two stories highlight the ridiculousness of the pro-illegal immigration crowd in this country. First, this from CNN:
A judge has ordered three teenagers to stand trial on charges related to the beating death of a Mexican immigrant in a small eastern Pennsylvania town.

...

The teenager, Ben Lawson, 17, testified that Ramirez was fighting with one of the suspects, Derrick M. Donchak, when another, Colin Walsh, sucker-punched the victim. A third suspect, Brandon Piekarsky, then kicked Ramirez in the head while he lay motionless in the street.

Walsh, 17, and Piekarsky, 16, were charged as adults with homicide and ethnic intimidation. Donchak, 18, was charged with aggravated assault, ethnic intimidation and other offenses. All were football players at Shenandoah Valley High School.
So three teens kill an immigrant in Pennsylvania, they go on trial for murder and "ethnic intimidation". Why is it that every time a crime is comitted against an ethnic minority, some BS PC charge has to be tacked on to it? If the guy was murdered, isn't intimidation a moot point? Bear in mind, I'm not defending these thugs. I just wanted to juxtapose this case with the recent developments in San Francisco to show how ass backwards San Fran's policies are. This from the San Francisco Chronicle:
A San Francisco city commission has taken a defiant stand against Mayor Gavin Newsom's directive on young immigrant felons by urging officials to permit the offenders to remain in the city and help pay for their housing, job placement services and immigration lawyers.

Newsom announced last month - in an attempt to quell a growing controversy involving San Francisco's sanctuary city policy - that the city would no longer shield young illegal immigrant felony offenders from federal authorities for possible deportation.

Three weeks later, the city's little-known, 15-member Immigrant Rights Commission approved a resolution that ran counter to the mayor's directive, urging the city to let young immigrant offenders stay in the city. The commission advises the Board of Supervisors and mayor about issues involving immigrants.

It called on San Francisco to pay nonprofit community groups to screen juvenile offenders to determine whether they should be entitled to city-paid immigration attorneys who would help them seek asylum as victims of abandonment, trafficking or abuse.

It also urged the city to provide adequate resources for placing the youths in "culturally appropriate" community programs approved by the juvenile court system, a policy that federal prosecutors have said was akin to harboring illegal immigrants.

And it advised the city to develop and expand safe housing, jobs and other opportunities for unaccompanied immigrant youth "because these youth are extremely vulnerable to exploitation by adult criminals."
Three youths in Pennsylvania commit a homicide on an immigrant, hang-em-high! Illegal immigrant commits three homicides in San Francisco, give him housing, job training, and city-paid lawyers.

Luckily for San Fran, it seems like Newsome is going to do the right thing here (for once)and continue cooperating with federal immigration authorities. [read more]

Column: McCain needs to pick a conservative V.P. because talk is cheap
Aug 19, 2008 - It is often said that the person picked as a presidential candidate’s running mate is of little significance as far as whether or not a particular candidate will win an election or not. I can only speak for myself here but, the Vice President pick of any of the Presidential candidates I have ever voted for has never influenced my vote. That will absolutely change this year.

Sen. John McCain has won the Republican nomination to run for President of the United States of America. He wasn’t my pick. As a matter of fact, he was the one candidate running that I really, REALLY did not want to win the nomination. I would have been o.k. voting for any of the other candidates that ran for the nomination had they won. Sure some candidates were more conservative than others and I would have preferred them over the others (which is why I endorsed Duncan Hunter), but overall I would have been able to vote for any of the other candidates. There were certainly issues I did not agree with some of the candidates on but, I would not have thought twice about voting for any of them. I’m sorry to say that I can’t say the same about Sen. McCain.

Sen. McCain has enjoyed poking conservatives in the eye at every opportunity he had. However, as soon as he needed conservatives during the primaries, all of a sudden he was touting what a conservative he was. Very few conservatives I know fell for this. We remember McCain / Feingold. We remember McCain / Kennedy. We remember McCain / Edwards. We remember McCain / Lieberman. We remember the Gang of 14. We remember him voting against the Bush tax cuts. We remember him trying to ram amnesty to illegal aliens down the country’s throat. In short, we know he is not a conservative. I would argue, he’s barely a Republican….but hey that’s me. This is not a candidate I could support freely for President.

2008 is different. The Democrats are running a Marxist as their candidate. Sen. Barack Obama is as left wing as they come. His policies come straight from Karl Marx’s Communist Manifesto. His associations and policies should scare the Dickens out of everyone. It scares the heck out of me.

In my opinion, Sen. McCain is taking advantage of the situation. He isn’t even trying to win over the conservatives anymore. He already has the nomination. He knows we fear what an Obama administration might do to this country. He believes he can do whatever he wants and still garner our support. Sen. McCain….I am here to say that that is not the case with me. And if the emails I get and the conversations I have mean anything, it’s not the case for a lot of conservatives. There certainly are those Republicans that are willing to support him no matter what. There are even conservatives that are willing to support him no matter what. However, if he thinks we all think this way, he’s in for a rude awakening come November.

There are so many of us conservatives that have been trying…..really trying to find a reason to vote for McCain. And the only answer many of us come up with is…..”Well, at least he’s not as liberal as Obama.” That’s not a reason to vote for anyone. It’s a reason NOT to vote for someone else, in this case Obama.

Every time I have almost gotten myself to say I will begrudgingly vote “for” McCain, he opens his mouth and says something really stupid. Or he floats trial balloons to see how we conservatives will react to some of his liberal nonsense. We usually react with disgust, but then many conservatives go back to….”Well, at least he’s not as liberal as Obama.” We can only do this so many times.

Sen. McCain has said he now favors making the Bush tax cuts permanent. He now says he supports drilling offshore. He says he will appoint conservative judges. Talk is cheap though. I wonder if he thinks conservatives will just believe him because he says something. I’d like to, but as Ronald Reagan said, “Trust, but verify.”

How can he verify with me? He can appoint a real conservative vice presidential running mate. There are several candidates the conservative base will be happy with. There are even a few choices we’d be thrilled with. But I will say this. If he chooses a guy like Lieberman, who Dick Morris is touting as his best pick, I will NOT vote for him. If he chooses a guy like Lindsey Graham, I will NOT vote for him. If he chooses a guy like Tom Ridge, I will NOT vote for him.

I don't claim to speak for all conservatives. I know some will disagree with my assessment. But, I’ll tell you why his choice for his vice presidential running mate is the most important decision he can make if he wants my support. It is the first chance we get to see what he will actually do as President. He has done a lot of talking about conservatism. Great. He needs to back it up. He needs to choose a true conservative running mate. If he doesn’t, all of his other talk is just that…..TALK.

British Anti-American Attitudes Founded On Ignorance
Aug 19, 2008 - So... The truth comes out... People do not know what they are talking about anywhere. This from the Telegraph:
A poll of nearly 2,000 Britons by YouGov/PHI found that 70 per cent of respondents incorrectly said it was true that the US had done a worse job than the European Union in reducing carbon emissions since 2000. More than 50 per cent presumed that polygamy was legal in the US, when it is illegal in all 50 states.

The poll was commissioned by America In The World , an independent pressure group that launches on Monday and aims to improve understanding and appreciation of the US in Britain and around the world.

Tim Montgomerie, its director, said factual inaccuracies and mistaken assumptions have contributed to Britons and Europeans taking a hostile stance towards their most powerful ally, which often acted against national interests.

"We wanted to find out how British people understood America and found that there was an unbalanced view. Maybe there are good reasons but if we cleared a lot of that factual ignorance we would have a better understanding of what America really is," said Mr Montgomerie, who also founded the influential ConservativeHome website three years ago.
It really isn't surprising. People everywhere have ignorant opinions of others and prefer to think they are more backwards than they really are -- it makes them feel better about themselves and boosts their own warped views.

I think it is natural for the majority of people to be ignorant -- I think we only have to decide whether it is willful ignorance or caused by the human stupidity gene. [read more]

The Cone of Silence Bunk
Aug 18, 2008 - NBC’s Andrea Mitchell has proved that we apparently live in a time where it is completely acceptable for “journalists” to throw out accusations without any proof. From the Politico:
Team Obama, in apparent recognition of McCain having the better night at Saddleback, responded by pushing the notion that their rival got wind of the questions.

NBC's Andrea Mitchell said on Meet the Press yesterday that "Obama people" were saying "that McCain may not have been in the cone of silence and may have had some ability to overhear what the questions were to Obama." The Democrat went first in the two-hour forum.
Now, seeing as this bunk has already entered the public forum, it’s up to McCain to disprove the accusations, an uphill battle when no evidence is produced in the first place.

Democrats are simply falling back on a classic tactic; if your candidate loses, cast doubt upon the fairness of the process itself. Mitchell was more than happy to carry the water. It certainly has taken the attention away from Obama’s dismal performance, and somewhat embarrassing answers. [read more]

Obama Answers "Present" on Abortion Question
Aug 18, 2008 - So are we to believe that the most inspiring, enlightened, and intelligent presidential candidate in history, a "leader that God has blessed us with at this time" as Nancy Pelosi called him, has no opinion on when life begins? Hezbollah Grows Five Times Stronger
Aug 18, 2008 - And so the terror threat grows while we are about to elect a dove to the White House:
In terms of weaponry, strategic and political positioning, and its ever-expanding international reach; Hezbollah is "five times more capable today," than it was at the beginning of the July 2006 war with Israel: A fact, according to experts, that prompted Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak to tell his troops during a Tuesday morning tour of positions along the Golan Heights, "It's not for nothing that we're training here."
Normally this is just discomforting news. For the past 8 years we've had a President who is responsive to the international terrorist threat and does their best to counter it through any pressure, whether diplomatic or military.

Now we're going to have “Mr. Talky Pants” Obama in the office whose idea of foreign politics is looking to Europe with hopeful eyes, promising not to alienate them (and thus not take necessary actions -- Europe has been appeasing their enemies since WWI -- and not learning any lessons).

Obama will be a clear signal to the anti-US, anti-Israel crowd the world over: funnel that money, deal those arms; what's Barack going to do? Threaten to talk with us in our own country, on our own terms, with no expectations?

It would be a more light-hearted matter if we were talking about Monsieur Obama or Herr Obama because countries like France and Germany do not need to be active in international affairs. We've just put them at the kid's table and let them whine when they don't get their way... But what's going to happen now when under Obama the US leaves China, Russia and Iran alone to deal with pressing global issues? [read more]

Media Falsely Claims Obama Has More Support Amongst Troops
Aug 18, 2008 - The media cannot get enough of their darling Obama and have now even resorted to writing stories about fundamentally flawed reports on the troops and who they support. This from The Washington Post:
"Democrat Barack Obama has received nearly six times as much money from troops deployed overseas at the time of their contributions than has Republican John McCain, and the fiercely antiwar Ron Paul, though he suspended his campaign for the Republican nomination months ago, has received more than four times McCain's haul," the report said.

The report also included this surprise: "Members of the armed services overall -- whether stationed overseas or at home -- are also favoring Obama with their campaign contributions in 2008. . . . Although 59 percent of federal contributions by military personnel have gone to Republicans this cycle, of money from the military to the presumed presidential nominees, 57 percent has gone to Obama."
Just look at it... "from troops deployed overseas." An anomaly within donations to Obama does not mean overwhelming support.

Grudgingly, they must later cite the fact that 59% of campaign contributions have gone to Republicans, meaning essentially 6 out of 10 people donating in the military are in support of McCain over Obama, yet still somehow the title of the article is 'Tallies Indicate Troops Favor Obama."

What tally are we talking about?

Perhaps richer troops favor Obama as apparently they give more but when it comes to sheer numbers we simply have the media deciding to write whatever report they would like. It is pure dishonesty on the behalf of the Washington Post and is reflective of the greater attitude present throughout the media.

I do not even know how you could find a journalist with any integrity to write an article so fundamentally incorrect. [read more]

The new Russia and the West's Power Deficit
Aug 15, 2008 - Negotiations with Putin and his puppet Dmitry Medvedev have proven to be nothing more than a farce, with ceasefires ignored, and promises broken. Russians continue to pillage Goergia like barbarians and will most likely annex at least two Georgian provinces, with little fear of intervention or consequence on the part of the west.

If Russian Prime Minister Putin is attempting to reconstitute a Soviet-style state, we are going to have to confront the west's power deficit. The west has been lulled into a post-soviet mindset, which rejects the value of hard power, and even meaningful soft power. So scared to rock the boat are we, that we've forgotten what to do if it capsizes.

With this conflict raging in the EU's backyard, the best they could do was dispatch an utterly ineffective French President Nicholas Sarkozy. Not that his ineffectiveness is entirely due to a lack of leadership, but it has as much to do with his lack of the tools necessary to confront the resurgent Russian bear. If this conflict has taught us anything so far, it has been that the EU, despite it’s chest thumping on it's newly found economic prowess, will still be dependent upon American power to stand up to aggression in it's neighborhood. This reinforces what we'd already learned when America was forced to take the reigns in Bosnia.

If we are truly facing a resurgence of aggressive Soviet-style Russia, it's going to take America, once again, to stand as the barricade of freedom. But just as Europe lacks a Thatcher, on the home front I don't see a Reagan running for president. So who is going to have the fortitude to confront and stare down a dynamic autocrat like Putin, who is unafraid to use hard power? [read more]

Kirsten Powers touting new abortion platform...despite the most radical pro abortion candidate in history
Aug 14, 2008 - Kirsten Powers plays pro-lifers for saps in her op-ed piece in today's New York Post:
IT took 16 years, but an anti-abortion Bob Casey will get to speak at the Democratic convention.

In 1992, then-Pennsylvania Gov. Robert Casey Sr., a devout Catholic, was barred from speaking at the Democratic National Convention. Party leaders claimed it was because he'd refused to endorse candidate Bill Clinton. But Casey maintained it was because of his anti-abortion views.

Yesterday, Barack Obama offered Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) - also anti-abortion - a speaking slot at this year's convention.
A speaking slot...wow, bold move. I guess the old maxim "actions speak louder than words" is meaningless to people like Powers. Her party did not field a single credible pro-life candidate this presidential election cycle (by credible I mean a candidate whose chances of winning were better than a snowballs chance in hell). How can an anti-abortion Democrat be so swayed by this obvious obfuscation of Obama's radically pro-abortion position with "just words"? When a man with Obama's history is elected as the de-facto head of the party, and women like Nancy Pelosi fronting House Dem's, we know where the Democratic Party is shifting. Both Pelosi and Obama have consistently received 100% ratings from NARAL.

In addition to his glowing reviews from NARAL, Obama opposed the Illinois state version of the Born Alive Protection Act, being instrumental in the defeat of the bill in 2002. Obama's website explains his position :
The website claims that Obama did not support the state legislation because it lacked language "clarifying that the act would not be used to undermine Roe vs. Wade." The website cites Obama's assertion that he would have supported the similar federal born-alive bill, which included language clarifying that it would not undermine Roe v. Wade when it unanimously passed the Senate in 2001.
With someone so dedicated to the integrity of Roe v. Wade that they would defeat a bill which would require care to children who survive chemically induced abortion (protecting them from infanticide, in essence), how can Ms. Powers with a straight face claim pro-life progress in the Democratic party?

All we can expect from this gang is a Cuban like situation where universal healthcare will include access to free, on demand abortions, leading to a sky rocketing rate of pregnancy termination. All we have to go on is their record, and their record is clear as day.

I'm not going to throw down some moral gauntlet on the abortion issue here, that's not my place, but I see gullibility on the part of Powers; well either gullibility, or her loyalty to the party outweighs her moral objection to abortion. Considering that Obama's "outreach" to anti-abortion advocates is so transparent it leads me to believe that Powers puts party above principals.

This party has no intention of honoring any promises or overtures it makes to the anti-abortion crowd. They’ll be cast aside like every other special interest group that the left panders to, once this election is over.

And if Ms. Powers is genuine in her enthusiasm, I've got a bridge to sell her. [read more]

Ralph Peters comments on Tim Kaine's assertion that Obama stopped Russian-Georgian conflict
Aug 13, 2008 - On yesterday’s Wilkow Majority we were joined by retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters to discuss the conflict between Russia and Georgia. We wanted to get his opinion on Governor Tim Kaine's assertion that Obama is to be credited for Russia's cease-fire agreement . Peters’ response is classic:
Wilkow: What do you make of Tim Kaine saying quote “It was a bad crisis for the world. It required tough words but also a smart approach to call on the international community to step in. And I’m very, very happy that the Senator’s request for a ceasefire has been complied with by President Medvedev.” You’ve got democrats who are claiming that the ceasefire happened because of Obama.

Peters: Obama has such an incredible ego problem at this moment. This guy didn’t even leave his Hawaiian vacation, and this is truly a world crisis…This guy stays on the beach, he issues a 90 second statement or a two minute statement on this thing. Nothing to do with what we said, what Sarkozy said, what world opinion said. No, the reason the Russians have stopped shooting was because Senator Obama decreed that the Russians would stop.

Listen, at this point I fully expect Senator Obama, on the way back from Hawaii to walk across the Pacific Ocean to California, and when he gets there before the Denver convention, he’ll probably take 10 or 15 minutes to find a cure for cancer, and also cure by the laying on of hands. The democrats are so utterly preposterous on issues like this.

Clooney Buys Movie Rights to bin Laden's Driver's Story
Aug 12, 2008 - Hollywood once again show's where its sympathies lie. From the LA Times:
George Clooney, one of Hollywood's most prominent backers of Democratic Sen. Barack Obama for president, has bought the movie rights to tell the story of Osama bin Laden's driver.

It may be a controversial project.

Clooney's movie production company, Smokehouse, bought the book rights from journalist Jonathan Mahler, who in "The Challenge" tells the story of Salim Hamdan, a Yemeni resident of the Guantanamo Bay detention facility in recent years after his capture for being the driver of Al Qaeda leader, Osama bin Laden.
I've posted about Hollywoods propensity for films canonizing a-holes in the past, like Tom Cruises soon-to-be bomb Valkyrie, about Nazi Col. Claus von Stauffenberg. This time though, it's especially concerning considering that Clooney is advising Obama on Middle East policy. With stories flooding out of Iraq and Afghanistan, Hollywood can't find any domestic heroes?

Wilkow points out to me the irony of the fact that Obama is complaining about McCain's attacks calling him a vapid "celebrity", while he's receiving advice from a guy whose Iraq experience is limited to being in the movie Three Kings.

Keep Hollywood out of Washington! [read more]
